PZL SM-1Sz is license variant of Soviet Mil Mi-1U built in Poland by WSK Świdnik (today: WSK “PZL-Świdnik”). SM-1 designation was created from Śmigłowiec Mila, 1 (Mil’s helicopter, first type).
Finnish Air Force (Suomen ilmavoimat) bought two helicopters of that type and used them between 1960 and 1966 with HK-1 and HK-2 registration. Finland bought another two SM-1W helicopters and Finnish Border Guard (Suomen rajavartiolaitos) purchased additional two of SM-1S-600 medevac variant. At this time Soviet Union was able to sell only one Mi-1 helicopter to Finland.
